Basketball player McElwain an example for humanity

The autistic basketball player Jason McElwain is a current student at Greece High School located in Rochester, New York. He recently became a basketball star when his coach Jim Johnson allowed him to play in the team’s last game of the year.

McElwain took his chance and scored 20 points during four minutes, he missed two shots on the first minute, but it seems it made him stronger as Jason hit six straight 3-pointers and another baske, in the remaining 3 minutes.

Coach Johnson has been the manager of the varsity basketball team at Greece Athena High School. Johnson said he has coached a lot of wonderful kids during his career, but he had never seen such an amazing performance.

More than a star, McElwain showed all youngsters there is no impediment to reach any dream or goal. He literally felt at the top of the world doing what he wanted and enjoying every single second of the game.

In today’s world, there are too many disabled people that practice a specific sport and they even have different tournaments or contests at which they can compete and develop themselves as amazing athletes. These athletes now have a lot of opportunities and the most important thing is the satisfaction they feel while reaching a dream and the happiness of being part of the sport world.

Mental Training in Basketball: The Driving Force in every Game

Most people would tend to perceive basketball as a purely physical game. You can see that evidence everywhere: endless physical trainings to bout any bodily weaknesses; energy drinks and foods that focus on combating fatigue; clothes and shoes that give comfort during the game; etcetera, etcetera.

Perhaps, to add further proof, we can add in the basketball athletes' way of delivering the game itself. They thrust and drive and pivot and shoot-it's all a perspiration-inducing game.

But beyond all the physicality of the game, it would be wise to believe that mental preparation is also a necessity in this type of sport. Mental training isn't just for chess or any sedentary mind game. In fact, it is equally as important as physical trainings.

Now, you might be asking, how you will be able to incorporate mental training or any psychological preparation into each of your game. It's definitely not easy. The basic attitudes are persistence, perseverance and the will to finish any commitment. Just like physical training, the required mental trainings ask for competitiveness and the three attitudes just mentioned are essential.

0nce you are committed to do whatever it takes to gain the edge on your game, here are the most common techniques that mind experts (that's psychologists to you) advise you to do:

1. Relaxation of the mind-this includes exercises that are similar to yoga exercises where you relax your mind inspite of the distractions. The mind relaxation technique is voluntary and you should be able to calm your mind even if the dog outside is barking or when your roommate has just blasted on the TV. Concentration is the keyword in achieving this technique. This means you should be able to control what you feel even if you have just gone through a stressful day at the office.

2. The Will to change Unpleasant Attitudes-this is a must. To be able to incorporate new ways into your game, you should be willing to give up your old ways. If there are many attitudes that get in the way of gaining a better game, then you must get rid of them for the sake of improvement. Anger management is on this list. If you are the type that explodes at the smallest provocation, then it is high time to control this negative attitude and gear it towards having a controlled temper. If you are also the type that puts off routines and other necessary trainings until you tend to cram when the game draws near, then it's time to discipline yourself.

3. Control of Energy-you will be better able to direct your strength towards the achievement of a better basketball game.

4. Have a Can Do Attitude-visualize yourself scoring more than you have ever done. If you believe in yourself and the power that your mind is able to do, then you will start seeing results. Equipped with this newfound attitude towards the game (and life in general) and constant practice, then there is nowhere to go but up.

5. There was an interesting study on stress management called the Stress Inoculation training. In this training, the basketball athletes were exposed to minimal, initial doses of stress until they gradually underwent heightened introduction of stresses. This study wanted to prove that immunity from stress might be achieved. Perhaps a good source of 'stress' would be the rigors of basketball training itself. It's physically draining but in a good way.

6. Attain a confident attitude-self-esteem is an integral part on any basketball player's game. Once he has the confidence, all other techniques come easy.

7. Love of the Game-work becomes work only if it stops being something you enjoy. When an athlete starts to see the boring side of the game or when he fails to 'feel' the game, then that's where failure creeps in. Shun basketball when you don't enjoy it-plain and simple.

There are so many techniques of basketball game improvement. But if you have read carefully, you will notice that it all boils down to one-you. When you know what you want and work hard to achieve it physically, nutritionally and mentally, then you are on your way to achieving success.

Who Does Ron Artest Think He Is Without Basketball?

You have to hand it to Ron Artest. This guy really just gets under the skins of many NBA fans. Mr. Artest, exactly who do you think you were prior to your basketball career and when you throw it all away, exactly who do you think you’ll be after basketball? It’s time to grow up and make your fans, what few of them you have left, proud again. Don’t you think?

He’s graced the covers of some of the biggest magazines on the newsstands today. Don’t you know that the executives of Penthouse, Sports Illustrated and GQ all sold large amounts of magazines just because Artest doesn’t know how to behave? When you think about it, it really is disturbing, especially when you visit his website. He boasts about providing the funds for 6 college scholarships and naturally, he is very active with children through his charities, summer camps and general love for children. And why wouldn’t he love children? He certainly can relate to them, right down to the temper tantrums.

In the day where celebrities act like drunkards strung out on drugs in night clubs while divorcing their parents, the general public should demand more from athletes and frankly so should the commissioners who slap them on the wrists with a fat fine and send them to the bench. As commissioner David Stern sternly impressed upon the media in 2004 after the infamous Artest incident, “The line is drawn,” Stern said as he referred to the suspension of players for the Indiana Pacers after Artest fought his way into a suspension which carried some of the heaviest of fines. Yes, David, the line was drawn and the chaos has continued but don’t feel too bad, it’s the norm among professional sports.

In fact, professionals are making such a name for themselves acting out with little self-control that even the college players are getting in on the act. This year in College Football, baby Vick really made his big brother proud when he stomped the leg of another player. He didn’t learn this behavior from big brother but he may be under the false assumption that bad behavior is a special prerequisite for making ‘a go of being a pro’. And we won’t talk about the asinine behavior of T.O. By the way, is he still around?

To add insult to injury, its people like Artest that REALLY needed the break that the NBA gave not only him but his entire family. Artest, now too big for himself has all but forgotten his most humble beginnings. He grew up with two brothers and six sisters, and from his own accounts in his auto-biography on his website, he tells of living in the projects of New York City. Less than seven years ago, he was drafted by the Bulls and a few short years later signed a multi-million dollar deal for a basketball lifestyle brand and gained the kind of money most only dream about. And yes, Artest, considering you started out in the projects, this NBA stuff has been fairly lucrative for you, wouldn’t you agree?

Still, in 2004, Artest commanded $6,158,000.00 in salary, but because he apparently has lost the need for money, he lost over 4.9 million because of suspensions. And true, he probably doesn’t need the money now but some other well deserving athlete did. Someone who would have been glad to sign autographs, shake hands, smile and do what they are paid to do which is play ball and please crowds.

What’s more, when professional players, like Artest, get by with a bad attitude once, they continue to revel in it. For instance, way before Ron Artest became a notorious bad guy, he had another scuffle. Two years prior to his fight on the courts with NBA fans, he grabbed a camera from a television station’s crew and destroyed it after a defeat to the Knicks.

Recently, his tantrum hurt only his own plans when he decided he wanted to go to Sacramento and then he didn’t want to go, and then he did and then he didn’t. In fact, Artest did go because he was made to go, just like a child is made to do something. Here’s an innovative idea for the powers that be in professional sports, if you are going to hire oversized kids to play in an adult game, why not send them to a behavioral psychologist before turning them loose on the general public?

On his website Artest says of his time with one of his teams, “At times I felt like I had to lead more…like Michael Jordan.” Well darling, I can tell you, you are no Michael Jordan. No, Michael Jordan knew how to act like a gentleman and he knew how fortunate he was. Michael Jordan appreciated what the NBA delivered to him and his family and he never disrespected his game. I really wish Ron Artest, given your talent, were a little more like Mike. And I’m sure your fans do too.

Sadly, I was a huge Ron Artest fan and I cheered him on from my home computer and television. However, with his attitude and the mounting chips on his shoulder, I fear he is at the beginning of the end of his career. However, the housing projects of Sacramento will welcome him back to his similar humble beginnings should he decide to stay there when basketball is no longer an option.

Playing basketball with tenacious defense

During a basketball game, people commonly shout the word "DEFENSE!". Come to think of it, do people in the stadium really know the meaning of the word? Does the basketball team, players and coaches, understand the meaning of the word? Is the value and importance of the word defense recognized? Sometimes basketball players themselves take it for granted. Everyone should remember that it is as important as scoring. A closer look at playing basketball defense is done in this article to clearly stress the meaning and importance of the word DEFENSE.

Defense is the team which doesn't have the ball. Defense is also the act of protecting the basket and making it impossible for the offense, which is the team who has ball, to score. It can be considered as a state of mind which dictates the body to do measures to keep the other team from scoring. It is the "get the ball" attitude that fuels the defensive team along with the desire to win. Defensive skills can be taught and learned as long as the player puts his heart in it and realizes its importance in every basketball game.

Transition Play

Moving from offensive to defensive play should be done quickly. Defensive assignments should be set as soon as the basketball gets out of the team's hands so the offensive team can't get ahead. The mentality of the players at this point should be to get the ball back immediately.

Purpose

Put the offensive team under a lot of pressure. Don't let the other team peak through an open shot or an open man. Guard every player and every corner and be aware of the moves and observe the play of the offensive team. Distract the ball handler through noises and movements so the communication between the offensive players will be disturbed. Put those arms up and use the body to block the ball handler's view. Decrease the chances of giving them opportunities to establish their team play. Keep your eyes open for rebounding and ball stealing opportunities and get the ball back! Stay between the basket and the offensive player.

Be Ready

Keep the lead hand close to the ball and wave the other hand to prevent a pass from taking place. The defense player's opposite foot of the offense player's dominant hand should always be kept forward with the same hand extended out with the palms up. This will allow an easy steal if an opportunity comes.

There are three types of defense: the man on man defense, the zone defense and the combination of the two, which is the Box 1 defense. Man to man defense is the simplest and most common among the defenses. One player is assigned to guard a specific player of the offensive team at all times. For example the point guard of the defense team guards the point guard of the offensive team. Match-ups are determined based from the player's height, speed and athletic ability.

Man to man defense is an aggressive style that allows forced steals and puts every offensive player under a lot of pressure. The danger of this style of defense is that when the offense player outsmarts the defense player, there will be no defense player to help continue to screen the ball because everybody else is preoccupied with guarding their own man. These results in the outnumbering of offense players versus the defense players which can help make the offense score.

In zone defense, each player is assigned to cover a specific area or zone instead of one player. There are many kinds of zone defenses. These are usually listed with numbers wherein the numbers correspond to the number of players in a particular zone. A 2-3 zone defense for example indicates that there should be two players manning the area near the three point line and three players manning the baseline. More often than not, a zone defense is limited to the key or the painted area.

There are some instances when a man to man defense and a zone defense is simultaneously put into effect. A box-1 defense for example generally is a type of zone defense where four of the players man their respective areas around the key. The fifth player, usually a guard, is assigned to guard a specific player on the opposing team, playing him in a man to man type of defense.

Player-Dependent Basketball Offense

Offensive play is actually a team-dependent scheme. Each player must know their roles in making points. While there may be players who can dominate games, all players must take action in order to intensify all moves.

In this article, we have listed various responsibilities each player must take.

The Point Guard
He plays the offense and should at all times, watch the backcourt. He is more like an extension of the coach in the court. Therefore, he must bear these qualities:

• Good ball handling including dribbling with both hands
• Good ball passing
• Must have good speed and agility
• Must have hard-nosed defense
• Must have good hits on outside shots especially in the absence of defense
• Must be able to dish-off and penetrate whenever possible
• Must have the ability to read the other team's defense
• Must have low ego and should not be mindful of the low publicity point guards receive

The Off-Guard
He is often referred to as the shooting guard or the second guard. In general, he is better than the other guard. He must have the following qualities:

• Good handling and passing
• Must be agile and should have quick footwork
• Must be good in dribbling with both hands
• Must be instinctive while playing
• Must also be a good defensive player
• Must be consistent with 15-20 foot shot
• Must be good at dishing off and penetration
• Must be good in reading defense play
• Must know the moves even without the ball
• His ego must also be kept low as his main objective is to help his teammates score and put points on the board.

The Center He is typically the tallest player on the court since he has to guard the inner court. He is one of the most important players in the game. His qualities must be the following:

• Must be bale to move quickly
• Must be aggressive in terms of rebounding and blocking
• Must have a touch of arrogance mainly for intimidation. He is a king in his own territory
• Must be good in short-range scoring
• Must have good skills with power lay-ups and make shots on either side of the basket.
• Must be good with jump shots and short hooks.
• Must be good in defensive leadership and should coordinate with his teammates • Must have good handling, good jumping ability, excellent upper body strength and strong hands
• Must take advantage of the defense play The Small Forward He is considered as the most gifted player. He should have the following qualities:

• Must be especially fast
• Must have good rebounding skills
• Must be a good ball grasper and passer
• Must be good in defense anywhere on the court • Must be excellent in scoring and fast breaks

The Power Forward He is more focused on the dirty works and is known for working as the "enforcer", thus he doesn't receive much recognition. Nonetheless, his actions are vital in offensive play. Like the center, he also controls the inside court. He must have the following qualities:

• Must have good rebounding skills both for defense and offense • Must be a good scorer, passer and a gutsy dribbler • Must be an excellent hard driver • Must be an excellent runner and should go all the way when on a fast break

Making the right plays in basketball

Every basketball team's goal is to improve their skills or their game and play well. It is important that the team has confidence before they set foot on the floor or court. But how can the team acheive confidence? The answer is preparation. Through preparation, the team gains confidence. The team can prepare through practice. Practicing skills and team plays can make the team confident to face any situation that they should encounter in an actual game.

In making a basketball team play you need a diagram to represent the court or floor, some chips or a marker to place the positions of the players, who are given a specific number or color of chips. This is used to explain the flow of the play so the team players know how to act or where to go during specific team plays. Extensive knowledge of the game itself, tactics and rules is also essential. In order to facilitate the discussion, everyone concerned should bear in mind that the strong side means that it is the side of the court where the basketball is and the weaker side is the one without the basketball.

This is where names such as John Stockton, Jason Kidd and Steve Nash come into play. These are some of the most skilled basketball players in terms of playmaking. While the coach is in charge of teaching how plays should be made, the point guard has the primary task to make sure that these are properly executed during the game.

Offensive Plays are used when the team has the possession of the ball. The focus of this play is to score. Plays of this kind increase the chances of the players, such as the point guard, to make the basket and score. Examples of this play are 1-3-1 offensive plays, 1-4 formation offensive plays, zone formation offensive plays, triangle offense formation and man to man offense.

The offensive team that will do these offensive plays is composed of five players with corresponding titles and numbers: The point guard (1), the shooting guard (2), the forward guard (3), the power guard (4) and the center (5). The point guard directs the offensive play on the court. The shooting guard is the best outside shooter and usually takes the shot that allows the basketball to make the basket, he should know the right timing for scoring. The small forward guard moves quickly and effectively and keeps the ball away from the defensive team. They can also drive to take a shot or do jump shots anywhere. The power forward is the best inside shooter, which shoots well from underneath the basket or on its corners. The center is the tallest member of the team and does the rebounds and plays with his back almost facing the basket all the time.

Defensive plays are used by the team when they prevent the ball from making the basket by guarding the basket themselves and the players as well so that scoring won't be successful. The focus of this play is to prevent the other team from scoring by trying to steal the ball or disrupting the flow of play of the team that has ball possession.

Plays of this kind puts pressure on the players who have ball possession making them vulnerable. The defending team players use this situation to their advantage and stop the ball from making it to the basket or making it possible to steal the ball from their hands. Examples of this play are the zone defense and the 2-3 zone defense.

Team players should possess characteristics when they are on the defensive play. Quickness is a quality that can be applied to the hands and feet. Swift movements are necessary to help defensive steal the ball from the offensive team. Strong legs can be helpful in doing repetitive quick jumps. Focus on the game is necessary and they should always be aware since they will read and observe the offensive play so they can use it to their advantage.

This will help the defensive team members to react quickly and appropriately. Defensive team members should be flexible and able to do different kinds of defensive plays depending on the situation.

They should be able to apply defensive skills on both weak and strong sides of the court. Understanding of the strategies and concepts of the game helps them make right decisions based on the situation. Good communication is essential for teamwork because if they work together on the floor, the offensive team will have a difficult time scoring.

Practicing the basic basketball skills as well as the offensive and defensive plays helps a team prepare for a game. When you are prepared to face the battle during a basketball game, worries can be set aside and confidence is gained. These are the secrets to playing a good game and playing it right. Winning and being a champion is possible if these things are kept in mind.

Basketball Training Aids to Improve Your Game

If constant practice and sheer dedication aren't enough to improve your game, then you might as well consider acquiring some effective basketball training aids.

Shooting

Oversized basketball - is usually 3 inches larger in diameter than your regular basketball. This is designed to improve your accuracy in shooting.

Board-less hoop - is designed to improve your shooting accuracy by making shoots without depending on the board.

Rebounding device - helps you to practice your shooting without rebounding the ball after every shot.

Shooting straps - is attached to your shooting hand to assist you in maintaining the right form while taking a shot, make the right follow through, and improve your one-handed release.

Dribbling

Dribbling aid - is designed to help you use your fingertips in dribbling (and not your palm). It also helps improving your passing and shooting skills.

Basketball goggles - are designed to keep your head up while dribbling your ball. The goggles block your lower vision so that you practice on not looking at the ball.

Speed

Speed parachute - uses the principle of a parachute that provides resistance during sprint. This is used when you are running which helps you improve your speed as you are being held back by the parachute. Speed parachutes are also used by sprinters and football players.

Agility ladders - helps you develop eye-foot coordination, foot quickness, and versatility. You can use your regular ladder to achieve the same result.

Vertical jump

Jump boxes - help you improve your jumping ability and overall strength. These boxes vary in height which you can use to strengthen your leg muscles.

Weight belt - increases your strength, at the same time, improves your vertical jump - helpful during rebounding and taking perimeter shots. Also available are weights worn on the ankles.

Jump soles - are training aids that are attached to your own shoes during practice and training which helps you improve your leg strength and jumping ability.

Stamina

Jump ropes - are the most basic and probably the cheapest basketball training aids you can have. And they are effective too. Jump ropes improve your heart. Jump ropes also improve your calf and leg muscles. For better workout results, try weighted jump ropes.

Take note that these are only aids to improve your game. They aren't designed to automatically make you a better player. Use them correctly combined with your dedication, hard work, and love for the game to get the best results.
